U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Daniel Holt served almost 16 years in the military, including four combat deployments. He deployed three times to Iraq between 2003 and 2009 and deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. He was honorably discharged in July of 2018.
Through his four deployments, Holt served as an Indirect Fire Infantryman. He experienced numerous traumatic events including multiple IED attacks. During his second deployment in 2006, his convoy was struck by an IED, forcing his platoon to assist in the recovery of those critically injured or killed in the attack.
Holt injured his back during training for his first deployment in 2003. This injury was continually aggravated during his time in combat, and he still suffers from pain, spasms, nerve damage and numbness throughout his back and struggles with maintaining his balance while walking. He also suffers from PTSD and tinnitus.
For valiant service, Holt earned numerous honors and awards. He was recognized with an Iraq Campaign Medal with six stars, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two stars, four Army Commendation Medals, a NATO medal, two Global War on Terrorism medals and five Army Good Conduct Medals, among many others.
Holt is unable to work due to his injuries and is in regular consultation with the VA Hospital in Dallas for assistance with pain management. Tonya assists Daniel in addition to them raising their two daughters. Together, they enjoy fishing, cooking, sports, and board games with the family.
Despite these challenges, Tonya has started her own business out of the home, and Daniel joins her in those efforts by building and creating wooden goods for sale. Daniel has plans to begin working with other veterans to teach them woodworking as a way to cope with PTSD.
