The Reid Family

U.S. Army SGT David Reid enlisted in the Army after graduating high school in 2008. Joining the military and becoming an Army Ranger had been a lifelong dream for Reid. Upon completion of basic training at Ft. Benning Airborne School and the Ranger Indoctrination Program in Georgia, Reid accomplished his goal as he was selected for the 75th Ranger Battalion.

During his time in service, Reid served on three deployments—once to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. After completing Ranger School at Fort Benning in 2010, he deployed to Afghanistan for his final deployment as a team leader for his unit.

On September 20, 2010, while on his third deployment, Reid was involved in an accident that would change his life forever. While conducting operations under heavy enemy fire, he attempted to clear a compound for his men. Upon entering the room, he stepped on a pressure plate and immediately lost his left leg.

Reid was rushed to Kandahar Military Hospital and then sent to the United States to receive care at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He underwent a total of 11 surgeries. Through extensive physical therapy at the Center for the Intrepid (CFI), he quickly adjusted to using a prosthetic leg and even ran the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon after only six months of therapy. Reid eventually returned to duty to complete his service and medically retired from the Army in December 2012.

In recognition of Reid’s bravery in service, he has been honored with numerous awards, including a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantry Badge, and both Iraq and Afghanistan Campaign ribbons. Reid and his wife, Veronica, currently reside in San Antonio. Through his physical therapy experience, Reid developed a desire to help others heal. He is currently enrolled in medical school to become a physician and hopes to one day open a clinic in San Antonio.
