U.S. Army Specialist Jakob Spraggins
The grandson of a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, U.S. Army. Specialist Jakob Spraggins of Waco, Texas, always knew a desk job wasn’t for him. After graduating from high school in 2010, inspired by his grandfather’s service to his country and the events of September 11, 2001, Jakob enlisted in the U.S. Army.
After completing basic training as well as additional specialized training, Jakob reported to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, serving as a paratrooper with his squadron, Bravo Troop 3/73 1st BCT of the 82nd Airborne. During this time, Jakob completed several training opportunities, seeking to become a knowledgeable paratrooper and well-rounded soldier. In 2012, Jakob, along with his troop, was deployed to Afghanistan, where he served in active combat for six months.
While on deployment, Jakob served on the front lines, gathering intelligence, performing reconnaissance, and training Afghan police and military counterparts in their mission to eliminate Al Qaeda from the region. His time in Afghanistan was marked by bravery, including surviving IED blasts, enduring intense firefights, and providing critical life-saving measures to his comrades.
Upon his return to Fort Bragg in August 2012, Jakob began to face the physical and mental challenges associated with his service. Despite continuing his military journey, including being stationed in Germany, the toll of his experiences began to impact his daily life, leading to a medical discharge in August 2015.
As a result of his service, Jakob has been awarded the Combat Action Badge, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and Valorous Unit Award for his valiant service.
Today, Jakob resides in the Waco area with his two daughters, who are the center of his life. A devoted father, Jakob, treasures family game nights and outdoor adventures such as hiking, kayaking, and camping. He credits his journey—and the strength to overcome adversity—to the unwavering support of his family, including his two ex-wives, whom he regards as instrumental figures in his personal growth.
Operation Finally Home is proud to work with a BAM Builders in providing U.S. Army Specialist Jakob William Spraggins and his family a personalized, mortgage-free home in the Waco area.
